Though most of the attention in Atlanta has focused on the Beltline and the surrounding neighborhoods, another major development in ATL is taking shape on the Southside.
The long awaited redevelopment of Fort McPherson now has a master developer to lead the way. On May 11, the board overseeing the redevelopment unanimously chose Macauley Investments to take charge of the project.
An early look at plans for the redevelopment included mixed-use developments connected to two MARTA stations. With plans for greenspaces, medical centers, arts and housing, Fort Mac, as it’s now being called, has huge potential.
“We believe we can turn Fort Mac into a destination for entertainment, film, gaming and music,” Stephen Macauley, principal at Macauley Investments, told Atlanta Business Chronicle. “We also want to find a way to feature the performing and visual arts, along with [attracting] technology companies. All these things can come together.”
His vision lines up well with Tyler Perry’s plans to build a studio on the 330 acres of Fort Mac he purchased in 2015.
It’s also a smart play for Atlanta’s growing film and television industry. According to the AJC, there are 69 TV shows currently being filmed in the Atlanta area as of May 2017.
Now that Fort Mac has a semblance of a vision, expect a lot of attention to move shift South in the real estate market. Though it has been long-discussed, Macauley, for one, thinks the wait for Atlanta’s Southside is over.
“I think the Southside’s time has come,” Macauley said.
